Colwyn Bay has launched a new football academy programme in partnership with Coleg Llandrillo, based in Rhos-on-Sea. The academy aims to help young male players aged 16 to 19 combine academic study with elite football training and match experience. Mike Wilde, director of football at Colwyn Bay FC, said the academy will deliver a comprehensive package including expert coaching, strength and conditioning, performance analysis, and access to top class facilities. Through its collaboration with Colwyn Bay FC, students will benefit from direct links to a progressive football club environment, gaining invaluable exposure to senior football and real world sporting pathways. The academy supports player development on and off the pitch, offering a clear route into higher levels of the game without compromising on education. A dedicated female pathway is planned for the 2027-28 academic year. The open event on May 9 gave prospective students, parents, and local partners the chance to meet coaching staff, explore the facilities, and learn more about the opportunities available through the academy and scholarship programme. Amy Thomson, Sport and Public Services Programme Area Manager, said the partnership creates a powerful pathway for young talent, combining education with elite football development. Samantha McIlvogue, Assistant Principal, noted the launch represents a significant step forward for football, sport and education in the region, reinforcing a shared commitment to developing local talent and creating meaningful pathways into professional and semi-professional sport. The academy will provide students with a unique opportunity to develop their football skills while pursuing their academic goals.
