Caernarfon Town are looking to add another body to their squad after Darren Thomas’ departure, the club’s 15‑year legend left the Oval in search of regular football. The 41‑year‑old manager, who signed a new contract until 2029 this week, said he had tried to convince Thomas to stay until Christmas, believing the midfielder would still have an important role in the squad. "I was convinced that he would get minutes on the pitch, but I can totally see it from Darren’s side that he just wants to play every week and enjoy his football," Davies said.
Thomas’ exit marks the end of a remarkable spell at Caernarfon. Davies reflected on one of his proudest moments as a manager – watching Thomas lift the Welsh Cup – and wished him well as he moves on. "So now I wish Daz nothing but the best, and we’ll definitely be keeping in touch," Davies added.
The transfer window closes on 1 September, and Davies said he will actively look for a new signing next week. "With Daz leaving, I’d like to bring another body in, so we can replenish. We’ll actively be looking next week to try and bring someone in. But if the window was to close tomorrow, I’m really happy with what we’ve got," he said.
Season Start and Upcoming Fixture
Caernarfon opened the season with six points from a possible nine, beating Connah’s Quay and Colwyn Bay before losing to Penybont at The Oval. The manager said the club had played some tough teams and would have liked a perfect seven or nine points in an ideal world. "The start of the season for me is all about getting points on the board," Davies said.
The next match is a home fixture against Trefelin, who sit bottom of the Cymru Premier table with zero points and zero goals scored. Trefelin opened their campaign with a 2‑0 defeat to Colwyn Bay, then lost heavily to Llandudno and were hit for six by Connah’s Quay last weekend. Davies acknowledged that Trefelin’s poor start does not necessarily reflect their overall quality and expects the hosts to provide a stern test.
"I don’t think the start they’ve had is a reflection of them as a team. It’s going to be really tough, especially away from home. We are expecting a challenge," Davies said.
Manager’s Contract Renewal
Davies signed a new contract at Caernarfon this week, keeping him at the helm until 2029. The deal was described as a sign of the club’s faith in the 41‑year‑old, who is known affectionately as “Fish”. "It didn’t take long, I can tell you that. It means a lot to me. I still want to strive to win stuff and be as competitive as we can," he said.
The club’s ambitions are aligned with Davies’ own, and he hopes the team can match that ambition starting with a win on the Cofis’ first trip to Ynys Park on Friday night.
The focus remains on securing a new signing before the transfer deadline while preparing for a demanding fixture against Trefelin, as Caernarfon Town look to build on their promising start to the season.
